Artificial Intelligence is the new buzzword that’s around for some time now. A lot of tech-enthusiasts have varied views about the developments in this field. Almost everyone would agree that AI would make life simpler and easier but there’s lot skepticism about the turn of events later on. Its fascinating to imagine something made by us being so insanely intelligent that we start considering that how its going to affect us in the future. Lets explore how AI is gonna affect us and discuss if it’ll be for our good.

Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere [AI] will become the ruler of the world.” — Vladmir Putin

Artificial Intelligence — Smarter than all of us.

From facial recognition IDs on our phones to self driving cars, we are already experiencing various things AI is capable of doing. But, believe me, that’s nothing compared to what potential it could scale up. It is sure that life would become much easier with the advent of AI in our lives, but, it poses a great threat to human autonomy. We’ve seen sci-fi movies that show AI taking over the planet from us, it might seem too fictitious, but such an outcome cannot be ruled out in he coming centuries with the growth of technology. Ai exceeds human capabilities in various fields such as reasoning, analytics, and decision-making which could be used in both good and bad ways. According to the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, Artificial Intelligence will be better than humans at translating languages by 2024, writing school essays by 2026, selling goods by 2031, write a bestselling book by 2049, and conducting surgeries by 2053.

What good can AI do to us?

We’ve seen self-driving cars in the recent times, but AI is a lot more capable when it comes to helping humans. AI can do a lot good to us when used judiciously. One of the most important benefits of AI is increased efficiency, we humans tend to make errors in our jobs and sometimes these could lead to catastrophic results. This can largely be put to an end with AI and automation coming into picture. In fields like Academic research and health sciences, the enhanced capabilities can be put to a very good use. AI can also be used to overcome the limitations of humans by being used in dangerous conditions like for diffusing bombs or for digging coal mines. It also makes life a lot more comfortable by being an aid to humans for even menial tasks like cleaning or cooking. It also exceeds humans by being able to work for almost all the time. Unlike humans, AI powered robots or humanoids wouldn’t need to rest for 6–8 hours a day, making them available for service 24×7.

Will AI take away your job?

With the advent of AI, it is a common fear that it would take away all of our jobs. Its true that AI is more efficient and capable than humans, but there’s more to it to consider. People have different thoughts about it’s affect on our jobs. Many experts believe that although AI would largely replace the unskilled-labor sector, it would actually create jobs in the automation and robotics industry. According to a report on Future of Jobs by the World Economic Forum, AI industry is likely to create fifty eight million jobs by 2022. While the much famous opinion is that AI would disrupt the job sector massively. With the exponential increase in population and inversely decreasing jobs, more people are gonna be unemployed in the coming years. This could create a large economic bridge between different parts of the society.

“Robots will be able to do everything better than us…I am not sure exactly what to do about this. This is really the scariest problem to me.” — Elon Musk

Will AI conquer the world?

We’ve all seen science-fiction movies where some very powerful piece of technology intended to be good and useful turns evil and takes over the human race. This plants a dreadful thought in our minds which makes us wonder if that’s gonna be our future. There’s no doubt that AI exceeds humans in most skills but that doesn’t mean its gonna take over the world for sure. What it lacks and what we have is ‘common sense’. AI today can only perform specific instructions and doesn’t have the capability to make its own decisions. But, you might wonder that what if as the technology advances, AI could gain human-like qualities in the future. That surely is possible. According to a survey conducted by Bostrom, there’s a 10% chance of that happening in 2030, 50% of chance happening in 2050, and 90% of chance happening in 2100. Even if AI gains human-like qualities, there’s a very less chance of it turning evil. What we should be concerned about is the misalignment of our goals. So, summing-up, there’s almost negligibly less chance of AI turning evil and turning us into slaves, we don’t have to worry about that!

Busting some common myths about AI

Myth: AI is gonna take away all our jobs.

Truth: AI is also gonna create jobs. A good example would be the Industrial Revolution, many people thought that with the coming of technology there would massive rise in unemployment, but, on the contrary many agricultural labor got converted into industrial labor. Similarly, AI is will enable us to work in smarter and newer ways

Myth: AI is only going to replace menial jobs

Truth: AI’s effect on jobs would on highly skilled professions as well, like surgeons or Accountants.

Myth: Humans cannot be controlled by AI.

Truth: The possibility of Super-intelligence controlling us cannot be ruled out. The smarter can always take control over others in the same way as we control elephants or tigers.

Myth: Machines cannot have goals.

Truth: They can have goals as well, like a missile launched over a particular region.
